New Year, New You Celebrations
Like last year, our classroom teachers will host these celebrations in lieu of a traditional winter holiday party in December before our break. Our hope is that this will alleviate some of the holiday stress on our families, as well as honor the diversity within our school and community. We are also planning some fun holiday dress-up days leading up to our break - stay tuned!

Mosaic Coat Drive
We are accepting new or lightly used coats, mittens, gloves, hats, etc. in the office for the Mosaic coat drive. Beginning on Monday, December 14th, you may donate to this cause by dropping items off in the office or sending them to school with your child. Thank you!
Setting Daily Routines and Procedures
Thank you for setting up daily routines for device care with your chid(ren). We have been so proud of our students for remembering to safely transport devices to and from school. Our teachers have worked to support similar routines here at school.While remotely learning this week, it will be important to establish a quiet learning space in your home, where your child(ren) can be most productive. Adapting our "work flow" can feel tricky and we appreciate your assistance with reviewing expectations for class connections and organization of tasks.
Common Sense Media
Have you had the need to check the content of a movie before enjoying it with your young children? Are you wondering about the content of a new, popular online game? Common Sense Media is a FABULOUS resource for families! It is a perfect place to learn the answers to the questions above and so much more. Check it out today!
Hour of Code
December 7th-13th is Computer Science in Education Week and the annual Hour of Code. St. Joseph Public Schools has participated in the Hour of Code for many years, and we would like to offer students the opportunity again this year. Mrs. Bacolor will be sharing a coding lesson with 3rd-5th grade students via Google Classroom. If you would like to do more coding with your child, visit the Hour of Code website for ideas. There are numerous activities to help your child learn basic coding logic and skills. If you are looking to reduce screen time, we encourage you to check out the “unplugged” activities.
A special note for families of students in grades 3rd-5th: One of the choices during the Hour of Code will be building a village in Minecraft focusing on inclusion. Students choosing this option will be shown how to install Minecraft on their Chromebooks and log into the program using their @stjoebears credentials. Our district subscribes to the Minecraft for Education platform, and we believe strongly in its educational value. If your child is interested in this activity, we encourage you to explore it with him or her. Of course, if you do not want your child using Minecraft at home, there is no expectation that students have to use the program. Limits and guidance with technology at home are fully supported and appreciated. We are so thankful for your partnership with our 1:1 computing program.
Positivity Project
Mondays are P2 t-shirt days! Please plan to have your child join our staff in wearing his/her t-shirt each and every Monday as we kick off a new character strength.
This week's Y5-5th grade lessons are focused on "Knowing my words and actions affect others". You child's teacher will be delivering daily lessons remotely. This is a great opportunity for you to observe the rich dialogue and thoughtful reflections that come from these resources.

Upcoming Volunteer Needs
Volunteering will look very different this year, but please let us know events you are interested in by filling out the form at http://bit.ly/VolunteerAtBrown. You will be contacted by the committee with specific needs at the appropriate time. Please note that some positions may not be utilized this year.
We have a number of committees that need chair or co-chair positions filled. If you are interested in any of these, please fill out the volunteer form or contact Kristen Bawks or any PTO board member. We will provide as much assistance or information as possible to get new committee chairs started:
Credit Union - work with Honor Credit Union to schedule and assist with the student credit union. If we don’t implement the CU this year, the ground work could be established for next year.
Mileage Club Chair(s) - similar to our old walkathon format. This will be a larger scale event without the fundraising component. Co-chair positions are welcome, and we have a few experienced members to help get you started. This event will not happen this fall and spring is to be determined, but we would still like to form the committee.
