Back to School Night
Partnering with families to ensure a positive and productive school experience is a top priority for our staff. This partnership began with our Ice Cream Social and Y5/K Orientation experiences and will continue to develop during our upcoming Back to School event for all families of first-fifth graders, as well as our ECDD families. Please plan to join us on Monday, September 16th to hear all about the experiences your child will participate in throughout the school year and information on how you can partner with us at home. Here is the schedule for the evening:

5:45 - 6:30 Session #1 1st, 4th & 5th Grade

6:45-7:30 Session #2 ECDD, 2nd & 3rd Grade

Our district and Foundation team up to provide field trip enrichment experiences for our students. We also ask that families provide $5 per student ($10 maximum per family) to contribute to the cost of programming and transportation. Please plan to bring your contribution to Back to School Night. Teachers will be collecting money in their sessions. Checks may be made out to SJPS and cash is also accepted. Thank you!

Please note: our families of young fives and kindergarten students experienced this event before the year started in the form on an orientation.

*This is an adult only event as space is limited. Fifteen minutes between sessions was intentionally built in to ease the parking shortage.

PICK-UP REARVIEW MIRROR TAGS are in and will be distributed at the main office pick-up line on Monday afternoon. We will send the tags home with your child on Tuesday if you do not pick him/her up on Monday.

Please hang the tag on your mirror when you pull up to the school so that we can call your child's name and have him/her ready for you. Our goal is to line three or more cars up at the curb at a time in order to move the line along more quickly. We are pleased to have a hired a dismissal supervisor who will work daily to ensure consistency and safety. Thank you for your help with this.

Our students' safety is a top priority for all of us. All children
must be escorted into the parking lot via the crosswalk. PLEASE do not walk between cars that are staged by the curb. In addition, parking is not allowed on Brown School Road. This is a safety issue.

If you pick your child up at the 4th and 5th grade doors off of Yukon Lane, please do not park across the street and walk to get your child. Cars must stage along Yukon Drive and Garden Lane, observing the space for buses to exit the lot. Thank you for your help with this.

Late Start Days
We have increased the number of late start days this school year in effort to have a more consistent schedule for our families. This incredibly valuable time is spent with teacher teams analyzing data to make instructional decisions for our students. On late start days, our school schedule is delayed by one hour. This means our buses pick up exactly one hour later than typical days and our first bell for students to enter the building with their classes is one hour later (9:25).

Supervision will be provided in the gym again this school year for students in need of early drop-off. The doors will open at 7:45 with breakfast beginning at 9:00. Students are required to sign in.

We are so proud of our Learning Champions! Medals will be distributed soon to all of our Summer Learning Challenge participants. It's not too late to turn your yellow sheet in!

News from the Kitchen
When sending in lunch money, please place cash or checks in an envelope, clearly marked with your child's first and last name, as well as the classroom teacher's name. Checks may be written to St. Joseph Public Schools. Envelopes should be given to classroom teachers. If you have more than one child in the school/district and would like the money to be split amongst them, please feel free to write one check and designate where the money should be distributed.

Email notifications can be sent to you weekly, once a child's lunch account is below a certain amount. To activate this service, please email Sue Punches (spunches@sjschools.org).

In effort to ensure equity in our school lunchroom and out of respect for our hardworking kitchen staff, we ask that fast food NOT be brought in for students to enjoy during lunch. Thank you for your understanding.

PTO Corner

Thank You!
The first week of school is successfully under our belts!  We would like to thank the volunteers who showed up each day to help our students figure out the routines for morning drop-off, lunch lines, and afternoon pick-up.  Your smiling faces helped make the Y5/K transition much easier! Another huge thank you goes out to our ice cream social volunteers!

Upcoming Volunteer Needs
Signing up to volunteer is not a commitment, just an expression of your interest in helping.  You can sign up by filling out the form at http://bit.ly/VolunteerAtBrown
  • Teacher/Staff Appreciation: We are looking for volunteers and ideas to show appreciation to our teachers and staff throughout the year. This past week we welcomed back our staff with highlighters and colored erasers and wished them a BRIGHT school year.
  • Yearbook: Do you love taking pictures? We would love to have you join the yearbook team and take pictures of events and classroom activities from now until March. Come join our team!
  • Walk-A-Thon: We need volunteers to punch cards as kids finish laps, collect cards and issue charms.  Shifts are 1 hour during lunch and younger children are welcome! Also, we welcomed a few “Celebrity Walkers” last year such as firefighters and high school football players and cheerleaders. If you know of a community celebrity that would like to walk, please let us know.

Confidential Volunteer Consent Forms
Any volunteer that works in our school and with our students must submit a confidential volunteer consent form annually. Forms can be given to Sara Codde in the office. Click here to access the form.

Please visit our Little Library located outside of the school office!

Here's how it works: take a book, read it, return it for

someone else to enjoy and get a new one (or keep it if you love it and are in need of more books at home). With permission from families, students can also bring books from their home libraries that they no longer read and place them in the little library for others to enjoy. Tell you friends and neighbors! All are welcome!
