Your child's Walk-a-Thon packet will be distributed Monday evening at Back-to-School Night.
Partnering with families to ensure a positive and productive school experience is a top priority for our staff. Please join us on Monday evening for Back to School Night. Important information will be presented by your child's teacher, setting him/her up for success this school year. This adult-only event is for parents/guardians of first-fifth graders & students in ECDD. Please see the schedule below for session times.
5:45 - 6:30 Session #1 1st, 4th & 5th Grade

Please note: our families of Young Fives and Kindergarten students experienced their Back to School Night event before the year started in the form on an orientation.
*This is an adult only event as space is limited. Fifteen minutes between sessions was intentionally built in to ease the parking shortage.
Field Trip Money
Our district and our PTO team up to provide field trip enrichment experiences for our students. In addition, we ask that families provide a contribution of $5 per student ($10 maximum per family) toward the cost of programming and transportation. Please plan to bring your contribution to Back to School Night. Teachers will be collecting money in their sessions. Checks may be made payable to SJPS. Cash is also accepted. Thank you!
Safety Drills
In accordance with the law, students participate in five fire drills, two tornado drills, and three lockdown drills throughout the school year. Lockdown drills are focused on internal and external threats, one being during a transition time where students may or may not be in the classroom. Specific times and safety plans are not shared with the public for obvious safety reasons.

Celebrating Birthdays
When planning a birthday celebration for your child, please be mindful of other students' allergies and intolerances. Always contact the classroom teacher as to the best time to bring in a treat.
With our continual focus on building classroom libraries to support literacy, you might consider donating a book to the class and joining them as a guest reader as opposed to a treat.

Announcements
Walk-A-Thon
Our annual Walk-A-Thon Fundraiser will begin September 30th! Students will be walking/running during lunch recess on select days the first three weeks in October. All money raised will go directly to the PTO which finances Field Trips, Science Fair, Classroom Gifts, Media Center Donations, Donuts/Muffins with Superheroes, Variety Show, Movie Nights, Popcorn Days and many MANY more. Parent volunteers are needed to help out with this fun event, and younger siblings are welcome! If you are interested please fill out the PTO volunteer form (see Volunteer Needs, below).
Pledge forms will be distributed during Back to School night on 9/16 for you to begin collecting pledges. Return the form by 9/30 to receive a free novelty eraser!

Box Top collection has typically been profitable for Brown School PTO. This year, the program is changing over to a digital format that requires you to scan your receipt within 14 days of purchase. Please download the app by visiting https://www.boxtops4education.com/
Reminders
- We will have a PTO table set up at Back to School Night in the cross hall. Stop by to ask questions, meet our Executive Board and sign up to volunteer.
- Our next PTO meeting is September 17 at 7pm in the Media Center. Come learn about activities we sponsor and meet staff and parents. Children are welcome!
Upcoming Volunteer/Donation Need
Let us know events you are interested in by filling out the form at http://bit.ly/VolunteerAtBrown. This is not a firm commitment! You will be contacted by the committee with specific needs at the appropriate time.
- Media Center: The media center has slots available during school hours to assist with checking out and returning books and helping with activities. Shifts are typically less than an hour, and you sign up for times that fit your schedule.
- Teacher/Staff Appreciation: We are looking for volunteers and ideas to show appreciation to our teachers and staff throughout the year. Much of this can be done at home.
- Yearbook Photographer: Do you love taking pictures? We would love to have you join the yearbook team and take pictures of events and classroom activities from now until March. Come join our team!
- Walk-A-Thon: We need volunteers to punch cards as kids finish laps, collect cards and issue charms. Shifts are 1 hour during lunch and younger children are welcome! If you know of a community celebrity (police officer, fire fighter, football player, etc) that would like to walk for one session, please let us know.
- Egg Cartons: Our art teachers (Mrs. Huber and Mrs. Warsow) are in need of egg cartons! These are used as paint cups throughout the year. This is an ongoing need, so feel free to send your used cartons to the school at any time. Both styrofoam and cardboard cartons will work.
