Book Fair
If you volunteer at the book fair you will get a 20% discount off of your purchase! More details in the Upcoming Volunteer Needs section below.
Yearbook Cover Contest
Brown Elementary School is looking for all elementary artists to submit their best drawing for the Brown Elementary yearbook cover!
• All drawings submitted must be in PORTRAIT format.
• All drawings should have the title Brown Elementary School with the date
2019-2020 boldly shown in your design.
• All drawings should be colorful using colored pencils, markers, crayons, or paint. Bold colors print and look best!
• All drawings should represent school spirit and what it means to be a Brown School Student.
• All drawings should be submitted no later than Monday, December 16, 2019 to Mrs. Codde in the school office by 3:00 pm. There will be no exceptions to this deadline.
• The winner of the contest will receive a free yearbook.

- Media Center: 3rd-5th grade classes have been added to the MC schedule through December. If you are interested in assisting with book returns, check-out, reshelving books and class activity centers, please fill out a volunteer form and we will contact you. You choose which shifts (45 minutes per shift) you would like to sign up for - the teachers for each shift are listed so you can coordinate with your student’s time in the Media Center. https://signup.com/go/gAFMxHJ
- Book Fair: The Brown Media Center staff host a book fair a few times a year. Helpers are needed to run the check-out and tidy up stock. All volunteers receive a 20% discount on their purchase! We understand the importance of educating the whole child. This includes embedding social-emotional learning curriculum throughout the school day. Mrs. VanHekken, our School Social Worker, along with our teachers and office staff, use common vocabulary across the school setting to assist students in problem-solving. Imagine the power of our partnership if you were able to refer to the same terms at home. Here at school we use phrases such as "following the group plan" to remind students that choosing their own activity is not expected at that time. In addition, we might ask students to use "flexible thinking" as opposed to "stuck thinking" when schedules change or they aren't able to have their first choice at that time. Please see the We Thinkers document below to learn about these terms. We also posted the Social & Emotional Learning Competencies and Indicators as published by the Michigan Department of Education below. This is our guideline as we educate students in becoming independent problem-solvers. We appreciate your support!

Holiday Giving Opportunities
Our Brown School Student Council invites you to fill Santa’s sack to help those less fortunate by donating to Toys for Tots. Classrooms will be collecting donations Monday, November 25 through Friday, December 6. The two classes that bring in the most donations will receive a pizza party with Silver Beach Pizza courtesy of Chris Thompson at Farmers Insurance in Stevensville. Donations must be new, unwrapped toys and could be for a wide age range. All donations will stay local here in the Benton Harbor/Stevensville/Saint Joseph area. We appreciate all of the support in years past and look forward to another great Holiday season. Thank you for the help!
In addition, the SJHS Interact Club has partnered with Mosaic Resale & Resource Center out of Benton Harbor to assist in collecting new, unopened and unwrapped toys for their Wonderland Toy Store. They are hoping for donations of toys between $10-$15 price range. There is a collection box here at school in the cross halls through December 16th.
The student Interact Club will be taking all of the donations to a church (a.k.a. Wonderland Store) in Benton Harbor where they will be sold to those in need at a very discounted rate. They will also be volunteering in the store the days leading up to Christmas. We appreciate your generosity and support. #BetterTogether
