Welcome Back to Brown School, Mr. Joe Rommel

We are delighted to announce that Mr. Joe Rommel will lead Brown School as principal, beginning July 1, 2022.

Joe is a former SJPS elementary and middle school teacher for 15 years and a current SJPS parent with four children enrolled in the district. Since leaving SJPS in 2014, he has served educators across the county and state as an Educational Technology Consultant at Berrien RESA and Executive Board Member of the Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL). Mr. Rommel is a perfect fit to lead Brown Elementary where he previously taught 3rd and 5th grades. With his huge heart for kids, creative problem solving skills, and a focus on forging meaningful relationships with students, staff, and families, Joe is more than ready to lead the Brown Elementary School family in the years ahead.

Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Mr. Rommel back to Brown Elementary.

Minutes from the March 15th PTO meeting are available here.  This meeting included a PTO Grant procedure proposal that will be voted on in April, the presentation of the budget for next year, which will also be voted on in April, and the announcement of open board positions.

Elementary Track Meet Returns!

The elementary track meet returns on May 6th!  This is an annual competition between the three district elementary schools and is always a highlight of the spring.  We will need 20 volunteers to help out that day from 10am-about 3pm.  Responsibilities will include running event stations such as long jump.  Training/instructions will be provided by the PE teachers prior to students arriving the day of the event.  Volunteer sign-ups will be available after spring break, but we wanted to share the date now for planning purposes.

This event is not well-suited for siblings to attend in a volunteer capacity - spectators are always welcome!

Dr. Grant Presentation

Dr. Grant generously shared the materials from her presentation with us.  If you would like to review them, they are available here.

  • We are needing everyone to send your child’s baby picture for the “Guess Who” display. You can email it to Brooke Roberts at Blr182010@gmail.com.  We need those ASAP please. If you are unable to email us a picture please send a hard copy with your student, no larger than 4x6, and we will make a copy of it and return it to you.

Also if you have not donated your $15 towards our funding for the ceremony & t-shirts please do (check email from your childs’ teacher about “Oscar Night”).

Bucks for Brown is Looking Ahead

We are looking for a few more people to round out our Bucks for Brown committee.  These roles would be in planning next year’s event and helping secure business sponsors for next year.

We also are looking for a couple of people who would be interested in heading up the spring picnic together.  This year would be spent working with the current chair, and next year the new leads would take over.

If you are interested in either committee, please contact Sheri Baker or Kristen Bawks.

Future Events

Most of our PTO events for the school year are already scheduled and can be

viewed here.  If you would like to help with any of these events, you can indicate interest through our form here.

Save the date for these upcoming hybrid PTO meetings.  We will meet in the media center as well as offer a virtual connection option:

April 19 at 7pm

May 17 at 12:15pm

Thank you, families, for treating our dedicated staff to a special surprise!

Big picture

Let's show our educators they are appreciated!

We want to share your stories about how our educators have shown support and dedication to our students. We are looking for stories about all education personnel – teachers, bus drivers, school lunch staff, paraprofessionals, custodians, coaches, librarians, administrative assistants, and anyone who is an important part of a student’s educational success.

To submit a story about a St. Joseph educator that has made a lasting impact on a student, please send story background, participant names, relevant pictures, and any pertinent information including quotes and specific story elements to Kelly Gaideski, Campaign Contact, at kgaideski@sjschools.org.
