Important Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedural Update
If you drop your child off before 8:15 a.m., you must use the parking lot off of Brown School Rd. (our main office entrance). There is not supervision at the north end of the building (Yukon Drive) until 8:15 a.m.
In addition, if you use the Yukon Dr. location to pick your child up and are unable to get there before 4:00 p.m., he/she must wait for you at the main office pick-up location off of Brown School Rd. as supervision ends at the north end of the building at 4 p.m.
Beginning on Tuesday of this week, all 4th- 5th grade students will line up on the back playground (over the Four Square Court) for their teachers to pick them up at the start of each day. Students should not leave their backpacks along the north entrance sidewalk in the morning. This will be rehearsed with the students on Monday.
Thank you for your understanding and attention to this important safety measure.
Lexia Core Five at Home
The students and staff are all abuzz at Brown this spring about Lexia’s Core 5 Reading program! We are seeing terrific progress already for students who are meeting their weekly minute challenge and are proud to announce that the program can now be accessed from home. Your child can log in through Clever on a computer or mobile device the same way he/she does here at school. A parent letter and phone call are coming home so you know how to use the program at home. It’s a little different than some of our other online tools.

Ahoy, Mateys! It's March and that means it's time to celebrate all the reading we love to do!
Unfortunately, some pirates are trying to steal our most valued treasure...our love of reading. What are we going to do about it?
You've got it...READ, READ, READ!
Since our schools are committed to engaging our students in a rich and challenging literacy program, we provide different opportunities throughout the year to grow and develop as independent readers. Daily 5, readers' theater, book fairs, and celebrating reading month are just some of the ways we make reading fun. Children who can read successfully read more often for enjoyment, leading to a lifelong "treasured" love of reading.
Goals:
- To motivate and encourage reading for enjoyment
- To create opportunities for adults and children to share time reading
- To expose children to good literature and quality authors of children's literature
- To improve language skills for children
- To promote a positive attitude toward reading
- To exercise our brain
- To have fun and treasure our time with books.
Directions:
Young Fives through Grade 2 (Y5-2)
- Weekly Reading Log - Parents, please help your child list books/chapters on their weekly reading log. Please initial to confirm that your child has completed the books listed. A new log will be sent home each week.
- Logs will be collected on Friday mornings. Once 20 books have been read, students will receive a prize and have their picture taken for "ARRR Amazing Wall of Readers." Students should KEEP READING to help our school reach our school goal.
- The top three readers in each class each week will be recognized and will get to pick a prize out of our treasure chest.
Grades 3-5
- Students in each grade will read books and take Reading Counts (RC) tests. Each grade has a certain number of points to reach. Points awarded for tests will be added to their classroom total.
- Once students have reached their RC goal, they will receive a prize and have their picture taken for "ARRR Amazing Wall of Readers." Students should KEEP READING to help our school reach our school goal.
- The top three readers in each class each week will be recognized and will get to pick a prize out of our treasure chest.
Treasure Map of Activities
In addition to the above reading logs or RC points, all students will receive a Reading Treasure Map with an assortment of fun activities to complete as they treasure their time with books. Students who complete the map by Thursday, March 29th, should turn it into the media center. We will have a drawing for various "special treasures" on Friday, March 30.

Kindergarten Registration is This Thursday!
St. Joseph Public Schools welcomes all parents/guardians of incoming Kindergarten-aged children to join us for Kindergarten Round-Up this Thursday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m. at Brown Elementary School (2028 Brown School Rd. in St. Joseph). At this adult-only event, you will learn about our Kindergarten program and will complete pre-registration activities for your child. Please come with your registration information, including your home address, phone number, and emergency contact information. Science Fair 2018
We are looking forward to another amazing science fair experience for our students again this spring. Please save the date for March 27th at 6 p.m. for this family-friendly event. It is sure to be a night of discovery and exciting experimentation. Please note - after much consideration, we have decided that participation in the science fair is encouraged, but optional in ALL grades this year.
Thanks to your giving spirit and generosity, we were able to raise $933.39 for Pennies for Patients this year! Mrs. Hassenger's class raised the most money, coming in at $148.99. Thank you for all of your donations!

Community Student Art Exhibit at the Box Factory for the Arts
A Partnership program sponsored by Berrien RESA, the Krasl Art Center and the Box Factory for the Arts
March 10- March 24, 2018
Artwork from 35 students in each elementary building will be on display at the Box Factory for the Arts. Students with work in this show have been notified with a letter. You are all invited to join us for the opening reception for the Elementary Show on Saturday afternoon, March 10, from 12:00 – 2:00 PM. You may stop in any time throughout the two hours to enjoy refreshments, celebrate our talented St. Joseph artists, and see artwork from elementary students throughout Berrien County.
This art show will be on display at the Box Factory until Saturday, March 24. The Box Factory is located at 1101 Broad Street in St. Joseph and is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM.
